Requested USDT: ~ $250,000 (66,000 DOT using 3.8 USD/DOT EMA30 price)

1. Context of the Proposal

The Polkadot ecosystem has rapidly expanded its support for EVM-compatible parachains, such as Moonbeam, Moonriver, Astar, Acala, Shiden, Clover, Edgeware, Darwinia, Bifrost, ParaState, Interlay, HydraDX, Litentry, OriginTrail, Subsocial, The Root Network, Centrifuge, and Phala Network. These chains collectively process hundreds of millions of transactions every year, yet the user experience for tracking, verifying, and analyzing this activity remains fragmented and cumbersome. Each chain typically operates its own block explorer, with varying levels of reliability, feature completeness, and data accessibility. There is no canonical, unified interface where users, developers, and researchers can view, analyze, and compare activity across the entire Polkadot ecosystem.

With the rise of cross-chain applications, governance, and DeFi, this lack of unified analytics is a significant bottleneck for ecosystem transparency, developer onboarding, and user adoption. Routescan, a multichain blockchain explorer with proven infrastructure and integrations, is ideally positioned to solve this challenge by building a unified EVM explorer for all Polkadot EVM parachains.

We are pleased to note that Routescan has already secured a $30,000 grant from Velocity Labs to support the PolkaVM Hub EVM with a block explorer for Westend (already available here), Kusama and Polkadot (in development). This grant, which was finalized in April, covers essential components including node setup and management, data indexing and recovery mechanisms, and the implementation of a user-friendly interface. This existing funding demonstrates the value and demand for our EVM explorer services within the Polkadot ecosystem and complements the comprehensive unified explorer proposed here.

This proposal represents Part 1 of a comprehensive four-part initiative to deliver a complete unified explorer for the Polkadot ecosystem. While this first phase focuses on providing a (1) unified EVM explorer for all EVM-compatible parachains, subsequent phases will expand coverage to include (2) advanced governance and staking analytics, (3) native Substrate chain support and full XCM monitoring. This staged approach ensures that there’s a progressive commitment from Routescan and Polkadot Governance, and that any new development will be evaluated after one of more milestones of the previous grant are completed.

2. Why and Who is This Important For?

A unified EVM explorer will serve several critical stakeholder groups in the Polkadot ecosystem:

  • Users and Community Members: Gain a clear, accessible view of activity across all EVM parachains, supporting onboarding, trust, and engagement in the broader Polkadot ecosystem.
  • Developers: Access advanced contract verification, analytics, and data export tools for all supported chains in one place, reducing friction and accelerating innovation.
  • Governance Participants: Obtain reliable, cross-chain metrics for treasury, proposal, and voting analysis, supporting data-driven decision-making.
  • Researchers and Auditors: Download, analyze, and visualize comprehensive transaction and contract data, fostering ecosystem transparency and accountability.
  • Institutions and Integrators: Monitor cross-chain flows, contract health, and network performance to inform integrations, partnerships, and risk management.

The need for this tool is underscored by the sheer transaction volume and the growing importance of cross-chain interoperability, as highlighted in the Polkadot 2025 roadmap and recent community discussions.

3. Proposal & Cost Breakdown

This proposal seeks $250,000 in funding to deliver a unified EVM explorer for all current and new Polkadot parachains over a 6-months period and maintain indexing for up to 18 months based on transactions throughput and traffic. The budget is allocated as follows:

AllocationAmount (USDT)% of TotalDescription
Historical Indexing$125,00050%Historical data recovery, block processing, data validation for all EVM chains
Infrastructure$85,00034%Server costs, data storage, API infrastructure for existing and new chains
Software Development$25,00010%Frontend improvements, API development, optimization
Documentation$15,0006%Technical documentation, integration guides, API references

All funds will be allocated to Routescan for the direct delivery of the block explorer.

4. Built Feature Set

Routescan already operates a robust multichain explorer platform with the following features:

  • Real-time analytics and dashboards for transactions, blocks, and contracts across multiple EVM chains.
  • Smart contract verification and public source transparency.
  • Full data export and blockchain dumps for research, audit, and compliance.
  • Advanced search, filtering, and visualization for contract and transaction analysis.
  • Developer-centric tools for monitoring, simulation, and gas optimization.

The full set of deliverables is available here.

5. Proposal Scope

The scope of this proposal includes:

  1. Integration of All EVM-Compatible Polkadot Parachains:
Comprehensive aggregation of historical and real-time on-chain data from all major EVM parachains.
  2. Unified Analytics Dashboard:
A public, open-access dashboard displaying transaction metrics, contract deployments, cross-chain flows, and user activity across all supported parachains.
  3. Smart Contract Verification and Developer Tools:
A unified interface for contract verification, analytics, and cross-chain health monitoring.
  4. Data Accessibility:
Comprehensive datasets and API access for researchers, auditors, and integrators.
  5. Streamlined Chain Integration Process:
An efficient system for seamlessly incorporating new EVM parachains.

6. Proposal Timeline

The project will be delivered over six months, with the following milestones:

  • Month 1: Finalize requirements with stakeholders; begin integration of top EVM parachains.
  • Month 2-3: Launch MVP dashboard with live transaction and contract analytics for core chains.
  • Month 4: Expand coverage to all targeted parachains; release smart contract verification UI.
  • Month 5: Community and governance dashboard rollout; open-source repo launch.
  • Month 6: Security audit, documentation finalization, and full public launch.

7. Q & A

Q: Why is this needed now?

The Polkadot EVM ecosystem is rapidly growing, but lacks a unified analytics and transparency layer. This explorer will fill a critical gap for users, developers, and governance, supporting ecosystem growth and trust.

Q: Will the explorer be open source?

No for the foreseeable future. This will let us maintain and develop the software at a faster pace.

Q: What happens if this proposal is not funded?

Development will continue at a slower pace, meaning that the unified explorer will only cover the EVM Hub and parachains that decide to actively choose a Routescan explorer service.

Q: How does this benefit the Web3 Foundation and DOT holders?

By providing transparency, accountability, and developer tools, this explorer will increase DOT adoption, support governance, and strengthen Polkadot’s position as a leading multichain ecosystem.
